Oil Seals - Introduction
1)Oil Seals are used to prevent oil leakage from rotary shaft and housing clearance.
2)It has a flexible lip that rubs against an shaft or housing to prevent leakage or ingress of fluid and dirt.
3)Seal selection is based on shaft diameter, housing bore diameter and width, shaft speed, working termperature, fluid, pressure differential and service conditions. Common configurations include single lip, double lip, triple lip and four or more lips.
4)Rubber sealing element or lip material choices for oil seals include: Nitrile Rubber (NBR), Acrylic Rubber (ACM), Silicon Rubber (VMQ), Fluorocarbon Rubber (Viton/FKM), Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPDM), Tetrafluoroethylene Resin (PTFE). To resist wear, the compound durometer (hardness) is typically 70 to 85 shore A.
Notes
1) Metal encased seals are most suitable for steel or cast iron housing materials, with low coefficient of thermal expansion and fine finishers.
2) Rubber covered O.D seals are most suitable for soft alloy or plastic housing materials and also suitable for steel or cast iron housing materials, with high coefficient of thermal expansion and rough bore finishes.

(HNBR) -25 +140 This rubber has similar characteristics to
nitrile rubber for oil seal use, but has
better resistance to heat, oils, and weather
than standard nitrile rubber
Acrylic Rubber
(ACM) -25 +150 This rubber has the same good oil
resistance as nitrile rubber, and has good
heat resistance similar to silicone rubber.
